If somehow this issue is pushed hard enough and that groups such as moveon get it their way, they hope that the shame thrown on a US Gov getting an international audience for a trial on "torture" will be made permanent and can be used as a rethoric tool for a very long time to disqualify any leadership from a US Gov desagreeing with the future "world governance". They see it as a necessary step on the path to establish a non democratic "world leadership" as they have evaluated their most important barrier down that way is the US, because of the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the spirit about liberty that goes with it.
Winning that battle is the moral victory they need to be able on a rethoric point of view to silence any leadership in the future from the people ready to defend, whatever it make take, its form of government, constitution and liberty.
With that tool in hand, they think they open the door to go ahead and campaign for some other project they have about the Union and its legal and institutional organisation opening the door for a "world gov" with some suprapower.
They see it as the lethal weapon they need against anyone standing in the future for national pride. It doesn't have to be accurate, they just need the assertion to go on far enough to make people doubt, and they will be silenced if they can be ashamed.
And you know what, it may work.
